Mainly because of other girls/women. I had some "friends" too that were backstabbers. As I got into the upper grades in high school I realised I had more guy friends than girl friends. With guys - what you see is pretty much what you get...with girls - backstabbing. I think it is insecurity - the one way to make yourself feel/look better (in some peoples eyes) is to put others down. I hate your sister is going through this.
